July '24: Improved Moderation
July '24: Improved Moderation
Updated over a week ago

Dear Community,

We want to fundamentally improve moderation. To do this, we have completely revamped the Community Guidelines to make them clearer. A big thank you to our gurus and active users for their feedback and contributions!

We reviewed thousands of moderation decisions and found that harmless posts were often mistakenly reported and blocked, especially in Safe Spaces and sexual channels. On the other hand, some posts that should have been blocked were allowed.

Clearly, our guidelines were partially enforced more strictly than intended. This has frustrated many Jodelers and led to dissatisfaction within the communities. We want to change this to keep Jodel a diverse and lively place.

Easier Moderation

With the updated guidelines, the general rules for what is allowed or should be blocked are clearer. Here are the changes we made:

  • We removed some sections that were unnecessary or confusing and were interpreted differently.

  • To further support, we are now introducing NSFW badges for 18+ channels to make reporting and moderating easier.

  • We simplified the algorithm for the percentage in the moderation statistics: The last 20 decisions each count 5% towards the statistics.

  • Within the app, "Illegal Activities" and "Third-Party Applications" will be removed as reporting reasons (and replaced with "Other").

Community Enablement

  • Jodels that are allowed but posted in the wrong channel should be moved instead of reported.

  • If you disagree but the Jodel does not violate our Community Guidelines, you can downvote a Jodel or comment instead of reporting it immediately.

  • In the comments, the exact number of downvotes will now be displayed again, instead of only from –5 when the comment is collapsed.

  • In addition, upvotes will now give you double the Karma.

Here you can find the updated Community Guidelines in our Help Center.

What’s next?

Next, we focus on improving control tasks in moderation. These are the posts where you get Karma for the right decision, and otherwise, a pop-up shows that it was wrongly moderated.

Thank you!

We hope you are happy with the changes and developments! If you have any questions or feedback about the changes, please let us know in the @feedback channel.

Jodelhautiii,

Jan & Team
