We're migrating our chat system so we can continue to build the best experience possible for you — and yes, that means improvements are on the way 👀
The migration will roll out in phases starting June 10, 2025, and will continue until the end of the month. Make sure to read the details below to learn what’s changing and how not to lose your chats!
Why are we doing this?
We’ve been working on giving Chat some much-needed love, and to unlock the improvements we have planned, we need to migrate the system first. What’s in store for chat users:
⚡️ Improved performance & speed
🛡️ Better safety & reliability
🌟 Premium features for JodelPLUS users — like images in chat
🎨 A slicker UI/UX experience on iOS
What this means for your chats 💬
As part of this upgrade, we’re only able to migrate some chat history — here’s what you need to know:
✅ What will stay:
Any chat that has at least one message sent between May 26 and June 9, 2025 will continue to appear in your inbox.
You’ll see the last 5 messages of that chat.
❌ What won’t:
All other chats and full chat history (outside of the 5 latest messages) will no longer be available after June 10.
Deleted chats (by you or the other user) won’t come back.
If you’ve named a chat, that name won’t carry over — you’ll need to rename it again.
The reply from a chat started will no longer be visible.
All chat history on the old system (sent before June 2025) will no longer be available after the migration process, and retrieval of this data will not be possible
Want to keep your chats? Here’s what to do 📌
If you have chats you want to hold on to (whether for memory’s sake or something sentimental), here's how to make sure they stay:
Send a message in the chat anytime between May 26 and June 9.
That way, it will be included in the migration and you’ll keep the last 5 messages.
If you want to save more than the last 5 messages:
Take a screenshot or document them how you'd like before June 10.
We're excited to bring you a faster, safer, and better Chat experience. Thanks for being part of Jodel 🧡

In order to activate PLUSchat, which includes images, one of the two chatters should have JodelPLUS. Both users need to consent to be able to receive and send images, so if you don’t want to activate images at all, you can choose not to! All images sent in a chat go through automated moderation checks and any explicit nudity is blocked.

If you have JodelPLUS, you can activate PLUSchat in a chat to enable sending and receiving images. Please note that the other person needs to agree as well.
Users who unsubscribe will not be able to share new images or voice messages unless upgrading back to PLUS
If you don’t have JodelPLUS, you can send images if your chat partner has JodelPLUS and activated it for your chat together. Of course, you would need to opt-in yourself for that specific chat.
If your chat partner unsubscribes from JodelPLUS, neither of you will be able to share new images or voice messages unless one upgrades to JodelPLUS
Note: PLUSchat also activates voice for iOS users; This feature is not yet available on Android.

This is not included in the first release of the new chat system. As this has been suggested by some users in the community, we will consider it for future improvements in chat! One thing to note: We will be releasing chat receipts soon, which should help in knowing if the other person is still active or interested in chatting.

For now, we have focused improvements on performance, speed, reliability and overall UX/UI. For example, the new chat allows us to deploy fixes for:
Disappearing or duplicating messages
Sometimes empty chat history
Not being able to accept or reject requests
Chat notifications sometimes not leading to chat
Bug “@OJ sent you a chat request” when sender wasn’t OJ
And new media such as images (for all) and voice (for iOS).
