There are several unofficial Jodel pages on social media which publish content from Jodel in many of our Jodel countries. We know, most of these pages have harmless intentions. But the responsibility to our users, their content, our app's image and overall values oblige us to reconsider our attitude towards them.
Despite our leniency and initial tolerance of third party pages dedicated to Jodel and their owners, we ended up with overwhelmingly negative experiences in the past years.
Why are those pages bad?
- Once they accumulate enough followers, the owners usually start advertising on their pages while using our branding and even try to get partnerships in our name. At this point, they are heavily incentivised to prioritise their commercial interests above the well-being of your community and Jodel as a brand.
- They publish content without the post creator’s permission. Users that didn’t want their content to be published on third-party pages have reached out to us, but as these posts were performing well, the owners refused to take these posts down.
Also, you shouldn’t underestimate what it means for a small network like ours if content is being taken out of it, just for the commercial benefit of one person, and put on a huge social network like Instagram.
Keeping an eye on individual fan pages is difficult, especially with content being shared in different locations in several languages. Because of this and the reasons cited above, we now refuse to allow external people to take original, location and content-based content to manipulate it for probable eventual financial gain.
We are trying to protect Jodel and our users from unauthorized use and brand infringement, while at the same time trying to prevent honest Jodelers from getting in trouble. That’s why we contact each page in the aim of starting a dialogue. We want to explain our point of view, what could happen moving forward and potential legal issues if an agreement is not met.
